If the service user is not engaged in key work, they are unlikely to engage with the Outcomes Star. Service users at an early stage in the journey may be unwilling to engage with the Outcomes Star – those at points one and two are likely by definition to be unwilling to engage meaningfully with workers at all.
- If this is the case, you have the option of assessing for yourself where the service user is on the Star and recording that in the client file and information system
- Use this as a baseline for later sessions when the service user is more engaged
- You may wish to share your reading with the service user at a later date.
If a service user is engaged in key work but is reluctant to engage with the Outcomes Star:
- Ask why and allow them to air any concerns they have - you may be able to address them easily
- Explain why the Outcomes Star is used with all service users and how it links to support planning
- Raise this with your line manager if they are still reluctant.
